Using The S.M.A.R.T System To Achieve Your Dream Job
Searching for a job is a job within itself, generally bringing frustration disappointment and feelings of failure. The job search is time-consuming and tedious but there is a system you can use to minimize disappointment and maximize results, how? Using the S.M.A.R.T system. This is an acronym for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Risky, Time table, this system is a goal-setting program that can be applied to your resume and create a self-marketing campaign.
SPECIFIC – Be specific when setting your goals
Take the time to select a definite career niche, industry or position. What does this mean? It means that if for example, you would like to be a Financial Controller in the Hospitality Industry your resume should indicate the direction you are aiming for not only at the beginning of the document but throughout the resume.
It is also important to keep in mind that you do not limit yourself to just the industry that you are familiar with, you must keep an open mind as long as your goal is clear and the path remains intact.
MEASURABLE – Set measurable goals
If your goal is not defined then you won’t know when you have achieved it. The best example of this is not having a set salary expectation in mind, telling employers you will accept any salary offered you can rest assured the company will offer the lowest salary possible. It is in your best interest to research the role you are applying for and its salary ranges to have a proper picture of what you are expecting.
ATTAINABLE – Set attainable goals
You may want to be an accountant; but if you don’t complete the relevant examinations or qualifications your odds are slim in obtaining the job. However, if you studied and completed a course on the subject, even though you have never worked in the field you are now primed for this new career opportunity.
RISKY – Set risky goals
This is the other side of the coin of setting attainable goals, you may think that you are overreaching when applying for a higher-level role than you have now, but if you feel that you are prepared for this level up and have the relevant experience to progress why not? Isn’t it time to get that promotion and a raise!
The only thing you need to be sure of is that you don’t bite off more than you can chew, don’t forget if you are progressing in a role that means you are leaving behind the cushiness familiarity you have now and diving into the new and unknown. You need to be ready for that
TIME-TABLE – Set a time on your goals
Setting a time for your goals will place a mental clock on the tasks you need to do to achieve your dream job, therefore set a specific date when you want to have achieved this goal or have obtained the role that will lead you to achieve your dream role, so make sure your resume is set and your attitude is positive and productive.
