Tips on How to Launch a Career
Building a career is no easy task, people get stuck quite easily especially if they have just finished studying and now want to apply their achievements. This generally happens because you don’t have a clear idea of where you want to be in your career in the next few years.
Set Your Goals
Before even thinking about starting a career or changing your job in general, you need to be sure of your goals. Goals are very important they need to be set beforehand, they would need to reflect what you want after a few years and they make the next few steps easier to do. Not having goals will set you on a path where you won’t know where you’re going which might eventually turn out that you wasted your time.
Internships
Internships help you get started in building a career; they expose you to work environments which in turn will teach you different skills both in your area of studies and out of it. Internships also shed some light on your character, since they generally pay very little to nothing they show that you are ready to log on long hours with minimal pay just to learn which in turn will make you appealing to potential employers.
Update Your CV and Online Portfolio
If you’ve worked in a few jobs and haven’t updated your CV make sure you do so, this is important for employers to see where you have gained your experience and it makes it easier for them to evaluate you. Your online portfolio needs to be kept updated, nowadays employers use social media and sites like LinkedIn to read your resume as printed ones are becoming something of the past.
Brush Up on Your Interview Skills
We all freeze once in a while during an interview but if it’s been a while since you’ve had an interview or have never had one you might want to practice a bit so you would feel more comfortable answering questions during interviews. After all, you might be the best person for the job but if you can’t impress during your interview you’ve got nothing at this point. Try researching common questions asked by Recruitment representatives to prepare an answer you think would be adequate for the question.
Join Recruitment Groups or Vacancy Listing Pages
Joining groups that put up vacancies that are in line with what you are looking for will definitely help you find a career. Groups generally also have recruitment agencies posting listings which in turn may point you towards the direction that you’re looking for.
Secure Your References
If you have worked previous jobs and are now applying for a new one, securing your references is a must. References are very important as they are an outside opinion of your work ethic and overall performance on the job from your superior, having these on hand will help boost your online profile by uploading the endorsement and when in an interview you may present it to boost your chances of securing the job.
